Replays and Rivalries

Under championship rules, a drawn match must be replayed in full. If the second match is drawn, 30 minutes of extra time is played, and sometimes a third replay is required. Double replays in 1903 and 1931 helped establish football and hurling as major spectator sports.

Replays have continued to invigorate the game since. Famous replays include:

  • 1997 Kildare v Meath (Leinster football championship, 3 meetings)
  • 1991 Dublin v Meath (Leinster football championship, 4 meetings)
  • 1949 Meath v Louth (Leinster football championship, 3 meetings)
  • 1941 Wexford v Carlow (Leinster SF championship, 4 meetings)
  • 1931 Cork v Kilkenny (All Ireland H final, 3 meetings)
  • 1926 Cork v Tipperary (Munster SH final, 3 meetings)
  • 1925 Sligo v Roscommon (Connacht SF final, 6 meetings)
  • 1903 Cavan v Armagh (Ulster SF final, 3 meetings)
  • 1903 Kerry v Kildare (All Ireland F final, 3 meetings)
