The GAA All Stars in football and hurling were inaugurated in 1971 and have been picked annually every year since. Vodafone, Ireland's leading mobile network, have sponsored the All Stars since 1997 and in that time Ireland's leading football and hurling stars have visited such diverse locations as Dubai, Boston, San Diego, Buenos Aires and of course Phoenix, Arizona in 2004.
The debate among the sporting media in Ireland over which players should be selected for the All Star teams dominates the newspapers and airwaves in the aftermath of the All Ireland finals every year. In the end, 45 players are nominated before the final fifteen in each code is announced. An All Star award is a highly treasured memento and denotes the arrival of a player at the very highest level of the game.
