GAA IT Strategy Document

Nickey Brennan, Uachtarán Cumann Lúthchleas Gael and Aogán O Fearghail, Cathaoirleach of IT and MIS committee recently unveiled the IT strategy for the GAA.

Following an extensive consultation process involving many people in our association, the M.I.S committee formulated a strategy which identifies a number of key areas where a development of technology and systems is required over the coming years.

The strategy is a guide as to how I.T. can assist GAA administrators to carry out their tasks more easily. The strategy document is available to download from the links below:

The GAA has available a Content Management System to provide websites to all official units - provinces, counties, clubs, affiliated units.

The login form for the CMS is available at:    Official GAA Website Login   You must have a username and password to use this form, see below.

The GAA through its National IT & MIS Committee is also offering 'Official GAA Sites' hosted on servers either owned by the GAA or supplied by a GAA technology partner. These sites will be offered alongside the main GAA website portal http://www.gaa.ie/ to all county and club units. If you are interested in a GAA.ie Hosted Site under the official GAA banner, please send a email to the following email address, PLEASE SUPPLY THE REQUESTED INFORMATION, adult officer, club crest in JPEG, contact details, club colours,   site-request@gaa.ie with the subject "Site Request".

The email should be sent by the secretary or another authorised club official, sites will only be provided through control of adult officers and not directly to unauthorised club members without county level authorisation.
Contact Declan Fanning at Croke Park for more information.

Sites currently available via the CMS solutions are shown below.

At present all applications are free including the club websites. A charging structure is still to be confirmed, all costs so far have been met from central funds. Any future charge will be minimal, and if charged will be used to fund the IT resources provided.

These new sites will offer the ability to maintain information in a Content Management System (CMS) that in its simplest form allows the publication of news items. The site software will also allow GAA sites to add/maintain/remove pages of content and publish images etc. This is the first phase of a major GAA initiative to introduce Internet Technologies.

These MIS solutions will be commissioned / customised on behalf of the GAA. The GAA will retain control over its membership databases, county draw databases, and most importantly website content and will exercise control of these databases to the benefit of the entire organisation. GAA.ie will still offer site hosting to 'Official Sites' maintained by existing Counties and Provinces, as it has done for the past number of years. These sites, of course, have the option of transferring into the new CMS software if desired.

Some counties and many clubs in particular have sites that have out of date content. These sites may have been maintained/provided by interested individuals that have moved on, leaving the site without a webmaster. By providing easy to use software it is intended that counties and clubs will not have to be tied constantly into the technical skills of a computing expert but instead will use the CMS as an application to produce content much like word or excel. Of course, some more complicated tasks may require dedicated training but simple content publishing should be relatively easy.
